The job of helping less fortunate people is one of the best feelings. The city of Washington D.C has been like a second home to me since; I was a teenager. Leaving my homeland and coming to the United States has both been bitter and sweet. I want to give back to my community, but I did not always have the time, this left a feeling of emptiness in my heart. While I was working, my spirits kept telling me that something was missing. God has put us on this Earth to make a positive impact on others and we need to love each other. I believe God brought us here to help others, including our family and those in our community.
On top of my resolution list, this year is to take the time to help others. I want to volunteer and give back to my community. I feel that this volunteer work will allow me to have a sense of accomplishment and a purpose. I registered with the Salvation Army. My first outing is at the Safeway Feast of Sharing event on November 22nd and the 27th from 1 pm to 5 pm. This center is located at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. I took two days off from work for this volunteer activity. I felt it was time to stop making excuses and give back to my community. There were a total of 20 volunteers at this event. Every one of us took time off so we can give back.
Working with the other volunteers has been an inspiration. I met three seniors that have been contributing to the community for many years. They took hours to help set up and made sweet potatoes pie and other food. Everyone volunteering was happy and cheerful. We all come from different backgrounds, but with the same mission to help others. We did not even think about race because; we are all God’s children. We all want to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Safeway has been giving back to those in need for the past 20 years. This event around Thanksgiving will feed 5,000 people in the community. There is also a health expo, and clothing will be given away. Over 1,000 people volunteered for this event.
My experience at the Safeway Feast of Sharing was a wonderful experience. I learned to be thankful for what I have and to praise God for all that he has given me. The people I met shared their stories with me. We laugh and hugged while sharing experiences. This event will hold a place in my heart. We need each other; to make the world a better place for our generation and the community that we live in; You do not need to have a lot of money to help others. Even .25 cents a day can change the lives of others, and you can have something to feel proud of. We all need each other to make the world a better place.
